Dr John Boorman is a UK trained Clinical Psychologist who has been employed within the field of Psychology for over 15 years. He has developed his expertise through working in a range of general and specialist child and adolescent mental health (CAMHS) settings, including neuro-development (Autism Spectrum Disorders), child learning disabilities, young people at risk for psychosis, and adolescent in-patient services.

John has successfully treated a variety of complex clinical presentations and challenging behaviours including conduct disorder, substance misuse, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety (e.g. OCD) & mood (e.g. depression) disorders, and deliberate self-harm. John has also worked privately in Australia in a busy and successful clinic where he treated a range of child and family (parenting) difficulties.

John also has developed a long standing interest in working with vulnerable children and their families which has led to him working in services for Looked After Children in several London boroughs, often partnership with children’s charities such as the National Autistic Society, Barnardo’s and the NSPCC. He has also been employed within a child and family court assessment team based in the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, and the National Implementation Service for Evidence Based Interventions for Children Looked After or on the Edge of Care or Custody. This latter post was based at the Michael Rutter Centre, South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

John is a Visiting Lecturer in the University of Hertfordshire’s Clinical Psychology Department. He regularly teaches on child development and specific clinical treatment approaches for children and adolescents on several Clinical Psychology Doctoral Courses, and has delivered training on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) for various NHS and private organisations.

John has a special interest in the contextual CBT approach Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). He is currently on the committee board for the BABCP ACT Special Interest Group, which promotes the dissemination and training of ACT throughout the UK. John regularly attends and contributes at national and international psychology conferences. John is also a member of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). This includes being affiliated to the BABCP Children’s and Families Special Interest Group, which aims to bring together those employed within child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) from across the UK, to increase learning and evidenced based practices.

Dr Boorman is a registered psychologist with the UK Health Care Professions Council (HPCP) and a member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Psychological Therapy

  • John utilises a number of psychological interventions including Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT), social learning theory based treatments, attachment & play based therapies, and Mindfulness based treatments including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to successfully treat children and adolescents, who present with a range of psychological difficulties.
  • John also offers specialist and practical advice to parents and carers in developing skills to help manage a range of common parenting problems.

  • Specialist, bespoke training for foster carers and adoptive parents on dealing with a range of difficulties.
  • Training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for children and adolescents and CBT therapists.

 

Supervision

  • Supervision for carers and professionals working with children who are Looked After or Adopted.
  • Supervision to professionals who wish to develop their skills competence in incorporating acceptance and mindfulness methods, including ACT, into their clinical practice with children, adolescents and families.
